Leeds is one of the fastest growing modern cities in the UK. Like most northern cities it had an industrial past. Now the center is brimming over with cutting edge media companies, hospitality organisations, financial call centers and classy retail outlets. The architecture is on par with London boasting a new Waterfront. The Waterfront is actually created around the Leeds / Liverpool canal and the River Aire. The Metropolis Office is situated in the heart of this new vibrant area. Set on Dock Street the office blends in with the restaurants, bars and funky offices making Leeds the new choice of fun seekers.

The interest from UK and US companies in Bucharest has stimulated some new and cutting edge ideas for learning seminars. Going back to basics and also integrating new social media training into programs is in demand. Metropolis will be delivering some new different courses for business professionals. Some will be pilots and others have been piloted in the UK. These programs will be short but effective trainings based specifically on raising awareness of current trends on personal branding and communication. I look forward to working with new associates in Bucharest on these programs. The European feel to Bucharest is now been mirrored in the business attitude of larger companies where the acceptance of coaching and personal development is welcomed.

This is a blog post in reply to Sunny Ray who operates out of Los Angeles and asked if there was any NLP techniques that can help individuals with eating disorders.

Here is a technique that initially I heard of in New York used with patients suffering with mental health issues. The process stimulated an abstract communication with the unconscious and allowed hypnotic interventions to be used.

I was working with a woman (32) who had suffered from depression and severe eating disorders for over 9 years. When introduced to me she was very reluctant to share information and open up. I asked her to draw how she felt now … and how she wants to feel. The two pictures below are what she presented to me on our following session.

This picture represents how she feels now.

This represents how she wants to feel.

The pictures became a focus for her to express concepts and feelings she had and found difficult to express in words. The state she must have been in whilst creating these would be a state of trance and focus. I find this technique introduces the client to a part of themselves that has some significance and qualities useful for them to create solution states.

Each picture she was able to talk about and explain in detail to me and she also surprised herself.

So Sunny this is just one technique you can be aware of to loosen your clients map of the world.

Practice makes perfect … they say. In NLP application I am not sure perfect exists, however those who practice and hone skills seem to create and enjoy significantly more results than those who dont. Things have changed for sure in the NLP world over the last 12 months, I have had increased communication from past delegates on courses globally (both corporate and pure NLP) wanting to revisit elements of their Practitioner training. The reasons for this seems to be a need to be in the environment unique to NLP Training … one of creativity, curiosity and skill building. Practice groups have there purpose although taking time out for a day can be more effective than a few hours after a busy day. Metropolis over the years has had many individuals who have formed long lasting relationships with those on trainings and welcome the opportunity to come back with those who are part of their story at pivotal times in their development. With this theme in mind this week in Leeds we are having a module presenting the first 3 days of foundation building for a Practitioner training where past delegates are welcome to drop in for full days and re charge and learn the new thinking and applications of the content topics.

NLP and the perception of it is changing to be more current and attractive to a wider audience. There are specific trends which are obvious and observable that in some way reverse the intention of taking NLP trainings manifesting in the business world. All past Metropolis delegates are welcome to join us at Weetwood Hall 24th 25th 26th March 2011, where the first day will be an introduction to the foundations of NLP and the following days will be application and skill building.

Anchoring in Practitioner trainings takes a logical format where elements like intensity, timing are key. The following ad by Budweiser follows the elements included in training using modalities to create a state and build it then interrupt the pattern (in this case by showing the product) and then re interrupting (presenting the product again). When a pattern is interrupted the unconscious is open to suggestion and advertisers use this format to implicitly link emotions to products.

Ericksonian Hypnosis One (Leeds)

Never has there been a time where communication is important as now. Knowing how to make contact at deeper levels of consciousness gets more sustainable and significant results. Hypnosis has been primarily a therapeutic tool up till recently when many organisations and governments have adopted protocols of hypnosis mapping the form to advertising, propaganda, education both online and offline. The present government have invested and support talking therapies of which hypnosis is the core. Understanding what and how hypnosis works gives you the edge. Many individuals are experiencing change currently with difficulty how to adapt to multiple contexts. Those who are trained and proficient in using the patterns can help individuals make pivotal change easier.

Course Outline

History The story of Milton H Erickson reads like a film script. It is a historical tale of a movement that is influencing human communication and has been for several decades. Erickson got results no others in the psychotherapeutic field could achieve and medical professionals would make journeys to meet him to see him work. His personal life had may twists and turns that built his resolve to understand human nature and the unconscious mind. He played an important part in the growth of NLP in the 70s when the two co creators (of NLP) modeled him and his work. Knowing the background to Erickson gives depth and confidence to individuals who learn the structure and form of what he created.

1.0 Introduction to course
1.1 Your learning style
1.2 Suggestibility testing
1.3 Inducing trance
1.4 Direct and Indirect Hypnosis

Hypnotic Skill Building

Building skills that are natural and effortless require knowledge and practice. There are ways to accelerate learning and skill levels using the protocols you will study. To become a master at what you do first you must know where you are and how you learn. All learning happens at an unconscious level and this is level you will be trained to access throughout the program.

2.0 Client Types
2.1 Epistemology
2.3 State Management
2.4 Unconsciousness responsiveness
2.5 Inductions x 3

Ericksonian Concepts

Milton was responsible for several concepts that when explored and mastered give you the control to use as and when you want. The form of these concepts make change and decisions simple. The structure of the processes are logical and result in outcomes you may not have thought of consciously. Been aware of these concepts also helps your clients process in a way unique to their personal thinking.

3.0 Two Mind Split
3.1 Inner Self
3.2 Hypnotic interview

Hypnotic Language

Language is a key part of Ericksons work and no story would be complete without words. Language (words) is attached to memories and states locked in the unconscious knowing how to help clients unlock and release ideas and decisions without resistance is where the Milton Model language patterns assit. Also there is an art on how to use language and deliver it giving added instruction or suggestion implicitly.

4.0 Milton Model Patterns
4.1 Analogue Marking
4.3 Tonal

Therapeutic Techniques

5.0 Dissociation
5.1 Deep Trance Identification
5.2 Imprinting

Metaphor

6.0 What is a metaphor
6.1 How to construct a story
6.2 How to understand their story
6.3 Isomorphic metaphors
6.4 Iconic Metaphors
6.5 Natural metaphors

Ericksonian Techniques

7.0 Catalepsy
7.1 Tasking
7.2 Ordeals
7.3 Provocation

Review and Assignment

8.0 Demonstration of skills
8.1 Assignment
8.2 Tasking

Additional

“What is NLP?” the most asked question with literally thousands of answers that are all correct. Here are three definitions that have traditionally stood the test of time.

NLP is Modeling Modeling = the process of assimilating unconsciously the patterns of an individual who has been recognised as one who achieves excellence.

NLP is the study of subjective experience

NLP is a way of thinking that is different … not better than any other form, just different.

It all started around 12 years ago when I was studying Applied Psychology at Leeds University. The degree course was modular including additional subjects to complement psychology … statistics, philosophy and sociology. We were encouraged to read around the main topics and also explore new ones to expand our minds and debating skills. It was around this time I decided to focus on occupational psychology and started to read the Times newspaper as I thought most business executives would favor it. The most popular paper on campus was The Guardian as most lecturers seemed to have it under there arm or on the desk. It was well written and not a bad benchmark for style to integrate into essay writing. One day whilst reading the Times I noticed an advertisement that seemed out of place to me. It was a small ad that seemed to suggest there was an American author who was visiting the UK and could elicit major change for business leaders. I had never been to a seminar like the one suggested and as a psychology student especially from the North of England it grabbed my attention. I called the number and spoke to sales guy who captivated me for almost 20 minutes. I felt that something had been triggered inside me after the conversation. One phrase that the guy said kept going over in my mind … “if your not doing what you love doing every day … what are you doing?. At that time my business funded my lifestyle I was lucky to have the flexibility and luxury to earn and learn. I could not justify the money they were asking for this weekend course but found myself booking on and paying in two installments. I had decided to use the seminar as a project for my degree. I was sure it was a con … so I would attend and psycho analyze the presenter and the support staff writing up my findings and becoming a code breaker. This was the plan … to be continued
